'Dressed-Up' Dot Plots in Excel
Dot plots are one of my favorite types of graphs. They are not only useful for making quick comparisons (between groups or over time), they are a powerful tool for visualizing data. Oftentimes, dot plots contain an overwhelming amount of white space, making them incredibly difficult to read. Recently, I challenged myself to rethink how much white space is included in a traditional dot plot, and this graph was the result. The dot plot was created by overlaying a bar chart on top of a scatter chart in Excel. Data were gathered from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) Results website.
